How to Use
Our Pigments are professional-grade products. Achieving the best results requires the correct application technique and a sound understanding of how the product performs on different leather types.
The Leather Academy trains professionals in the correct use of our care and restoration products. Our training provides hands-on guidance so you can work with confidence and produce exceptional results every time.
Step 1 — Surface Preparation
A thorough preparation is the foundation of any lasting result. Follow these steps in order:
- Clean the surface — remove all dust, dirt and contamination using Leather Ultimate Cleaner.
- Degrease if needed — for heavily soiled leather or grease staining, treat first with Leather Degreaser, followed by Leather Alcohol Cleaner or Leather Liquid Degreaser for a final degrease.
- Strip damaged paintwork — if the existing paint coat is flaking or compromised, remove it using Solvent Cleaner or Leather Prep before proceeding.
- Prime the surface — apply Leather Primer with 5–10% Cross Linker X added to maximise adhesion and durability.
Step 2 — Colour Application
Shake the Pigment thoroughly before use. For the best result, apply in thin, even coats.
Spray application (airbrush or spray gun) Can be diluted with distilled water. Use a nozzle diameter of 0.5–1.2 mm at 1.1–8 bar pressure (varies by equipment model). Compressed air must be clean and free from water and oil. Mix thoroughly and filter through a 190-micron filter before use.
Manual application (sponge, brush or roller) The viscosity of our Pigments is suited to hand application, making it ideal for touching up localised damage, building a base layer, or hand-painting techniques on leather. For thicker consistency, add our Thickening Agent.
Step 3 — Finishing
Once the colour coats are complete, protect and seal the surface with Leather Top Coat, adding 5–10% Cross Linker X polyurethane fixative. This final step significantly enhances abrasion resistance and the long-term durability of the finished surface.
